Goodyear announced recently that Porsche has chosen its award winning Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire for the popular 19” wheel fitment on its Porsche 911 Carrera 2. That means that one of the world’s leading sportscars will be fitted with the 235/40 ZR 19 (front) and 285/35 ZR 19 (rear) Goodyear tires when first delivered to the customer. Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 was recently awarded the top score by the UK’s Auto Express.

Tire choice is extremely important on cars like the 911. The Porsche has a rear engine configuration which offers outstanding traction, but requires the ability of the rear tires transfer the 350 break horsepower to the tarmac to ensure the full performance of the car. Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire will meet this need thanks to its recognized solid performance and quality credentials.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera 2 was not only built for performance, but has also been designed to meet the increasingly low CO2 emission requirements. Goodyear’s FuelSaving Technology, also integrated into its Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tire will further support CO2 emission reductions. The technology is driven by reduced tire weight and a new ‘high surface’ silica grade that contributes to reduced heat generation (lowering the rolling resistance).

The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 also features the latest ActiveBraking Technology. Using innovative 3 dimensional block design within the tire tread, the tire’s contact with the road increases when braking.

“The control and braking performance of the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, demonstrated in both magazine other benchmarking tests, is a critical factor for the demanding drivers of sportscars such as the Porsche 911”, states Eduardo Garrido, Marketing Manager at Goodyear. “On top Goodyear’s FuelSaving Technology helps drivers reduce overall fuel consumption while ActiveBraking increases road contact during braking, thereby delivering significantly shorter braking distances on both dry and wet roads.”

Winners of 2009 Bayani ng Kalsada Awarded

Goodyear Philippines concludes the nationwide search for the 2009 Bayani ng Kalsada with the awarding of five outstanding drivers nationwide who exemplified modern-day heroism on the road. Now in its fourth year, Bayani ng Kalsada annually recognizes Filipino drivers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help others in need.
In the photo Assistant Secretary Alberto Suansing (extreme left) of the Land Transportation Office joins Gerry Alava (extreme right), Goodyear Philippines Managing Director, in awarding the five new winners of the Bayani ng Kalsada 2009 namely (from left to right) Alejandro Baldevieso, Arturo Dagatan, Primitivo Salo, Andy Alvarez and the first female winner of the award Georgine Manantan.

Gerry Alava, Managing Director of Goodyear Philippines explains, “Bayani ng Kalsada is not simply a popularity contest, it is a concrete manifestation of what road safety is all about— a celebration of ordinary deeds done by ordinary people who went beyond comfort and convenience to be ‘Good Samaritans’ when the situation called for it.”

More than anyone, the responsibility of road safety falls more heavily on the shoulders of the public utility drivers whose passengers’ lives and safety they hold in their hands. BNK served to uplift the dignity of these drivers as four out of the five winners were all public utility vehicle drivers.

Jeepney driver Andy Alvarez (national champion) and tricycle driver Alejandro Baldevieso exemplified heroism as they stepped out of their comfort zones and came to the rescue of individuals who needed immediate medical assistance. While bus driver Arturo Dagatan and taxi driver Primitivo Salo both put honesty above their personal needs as they chose to return monies left in their vehicles.

“Inaalagaan ko po ang aking dignidad bilang taxi driver. Hindi po ako naghahangad ng parangal, ang gusto ko lang po ay makatulong sa kapwa ko. Ang pagiging bayani ay ang pagmamahal ko sa kapwa at sa mga pasahero. Bilang Pilipino, kung isasapuso natin ito, ay maaring magkaroon ng pagbabago sa bansa. (I have always taken care of my dignity as a taxi driver. I do not seek awards or commendations. A hero is one who loves his neighbor and watches out for them. As Filipinos, if we believe in this, we will start to see change happen in our nation),” said Primitivo Salo.

Meanwhile, Georgine Manantan from Cubao is the sole private driver and first female to win the award. As a nurse and mother of four, she always had the natural instinct to help those in need, whether on or off the road. One particular act of bravery and courage by Manantan that justifies her as the Bayani ng Kalsada was when she saved a one-year old child from being hit by a truck by using her own car as a barrier.

“My instinct as a mother took over and I thought about my own children when I saved the child. I know in my heart that if my kids had been in need, I would want someone to be there to help them,” said Manantan.

Regional winners Baldevieso, Dagatan, Salo and Manantan will each receive a cash prize of Php 30,000. While overall winner, Alvarez, will receive Php 50,000.

Bayani ng Kalsada is the Philippine version of a successful, long-running Goodyear program held annually in the U.S. and Canada (since 1983) that is now also held annually in Asia Pacific countries such as Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia. Dubbed Highway Heroes, the program has recognized truck drivers who have done heroic acts of courage, sacrifice and service on the road over the last 21 years. This year’s program is in cooperation with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Manila Bulletin, Pilipino Star Ngayon, Abante, Centro Negosyo, Honda Safety Driving Center, Standard Insurance, Cebuana Lhuillier and Safety Organization of the Philippines, Inc. (SOPI).

Team Develops Energy Efficient Tire That Won’t Go Flat

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have developed an airless tire to transport large, long-range vehicles across the surface of the moon.

The new “Spring Tire” with 800 load bearing springs is designed to carry much heavier vehicles over much greater distances than the wire mesh tire previously used on the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). The new tire will allow for broader exploration and the eventual development and maintenance of a lunar outpost.

According to Vivake Asnani, NASA’s principal investigator at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, this was a significant change in requirements that required innovation. “With the combined requirements of increased load and life, we needed to make a fundamental change to the original moon tire,” he said.

“What the Goodyear-NASA team developed is an innovative, yet simple network of interwoven springs that does the job. The tire design seems almost obvious in retrospect, as most good inventions do.”

The Spring Tire was installed on NASA’s Lunar Electric Rover test vehicle and put through its paces at the Johnson Space Center’s “Rock Yard” in Houston where it performed successfully.

“This tire is extremely durable and extremely energy efficient,” noted Jim Benzing, Goodyear’s lead innovator on the project. “The spring design contours to the surface on which it’s driven to provide traction. But all of the energy used to deform the tire is returned when the springs rebound. It doesn’t generate heat like a normal tire.”

According to Goodyear engineers, development of the original Apollo lunar mission tires, and the new Spring Tire were driven by the fact that traditional rubber, pneumatic (air-filled) tires used on Earth have little utility on the moon. This is because rubber properties vary significantly between the extreme cold and hot temperatures experienced in the shaded and directly sunlit areas of the moon. Furthermore, unfiltered solar radiation degrades rubber, and pneumatic tires pose an unacceptable risk of deflation.

According to Asnani, the Spring Tire does not have a “single point failure mode. What that means,” he said, “is that a hard impact that might cause a pneumatic tire to puncture and deflate would only damage one of the 800 load bearing springs. Along with having this ultra-redundant characteristic, the tire has a combination of overall stiffness yet flexibility that allows off-road vehicles to travel fast over rough terrain with relatively little motion being transferred to the vehicle.”

NASA has been so impressed with the tire that it decided to highlight the project during NASA’s recent “Day on the Hill” exhibit at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC. “I spoke with 10 to 15 members of Congress and about sixty staffers,” noted NASA’s Asnani. “Virtually everyone I spoke with was blown away by the idea that this technology may one day be used, not only for extraterrestrial vehicles, but also, perhaps, for vehicles here on Earth.”

Additionally, NASA has highlighted this technology development in its annual Hallmarks of Success video series. The series features NASA’s most positive corporate team efforts. Goodyear was one of only 11 corporations and the only tire company included in the video. Those interested in viewing the video may do so at http://www.nasa.gov/offices/ipp/video/hallmarks_ moontires_index.html.

Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies. It employs approximately 70,000 people and manufactures its products in more than 60 facilities in 25 countries around the world. Its two Innovation Centers in Akron, Ohio and Luxembourg strive to develop state-of-the-art products and services that set the technology and performance standard for the industry.
