Powershift engine reduces up to 8% of fuel costs
When it burst on the scene just three years ago, the Volvo C30 caused more heads to swivel than a fashion show. Most eyes were focused on the unique rear styling that set it apart from the pack. For an encore, Volvo's designers have given the C30 all-new front styling for 2010 with a radically altered fascia, fenders, trapezoidal headlights and honeycomb grille wearing an enlarged Volvo iron mark. The result is sure to cause double takes whether the car is coming or going.
This dynamic new look further emphasizes the C30's playful appeal to the young and young at heart. Along with the angled lines of the front bumper, the new headlights, drawn offset and up, reinforce the impression of speed and sport. While the biggest changes are at the front, the contours of the rear fascia are curvier and more dynamic than before.
Orange Flame metallic is a vibrant new exterior color choice added to the C30's already tempting array of hues. Inside the cabin, customers can select from a fresh, modern array of colors and materials. Off Black/Blonde is an all-new color combination that serves as an expression of Volvo's strong Scandinavian design tradition.
The C30 continues to be offered in two models, one of which is the C30 2.0L that is offered at PhP1,788,888.00. The 2.0L is featured with a fuel-saving dual-clutch Powershift technology that reduces costs of up to 8%. Also available is the 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder T5 engine that delivers 230 horsepower and offered at PhP2,388,888.00
Thanks to its compact size and clever design, the Volvo C30 is as fun to drive as it is to admire. Its generous front and rear tracks and a relatively long wheelbase contribute to inspiring and stable driving characteristics. The chassis, with MacPherson front suspension and a multilink rear axle, is optimized to provide outstanding control and precise response to the driver's inputs.
Volvo endows the entry luxury C30 T5 with a generous roster of standard equipment. The list includes standard leather gearshift knob with aluminum inlay, leather parking brake cover, trip computer, cruise control, leather seats, Bi-Xenon headlamps, rear spoilers, twin tail pipes and the best audio system on the road -- the Dynaudio Premium Sound System with Dolby® Pro Logic® II Surround Sound.
The C30 features Volvo's patented front structure. Divided into zones, it incorporates different deformation properties with the outer zones accounting for most of the deformation in a frontal collision. The more the collision forces approach the passenger compartment, the less the material is deformed. To ensure that each zone has the right characteristics, the quality of the steel has been varied. Four different types of steel are used. Apart from normal body steel, three different grades of high-strength steel are used. Different steel grades also are used in the rear to help protect occupants in the event of a rear-end collision.
This two-door, four-seater sporty coupe undeniably offers best-in-class comfort, world-class safety and stimulating modern design characteristics. A multi-faceted gem of a vehicle, you'll discover that the redesigned Volvo C30 is highly qualified to protect you and yours -- especially from boredom.

While most students gear up for vacation this summer, a team of students and teachers of the mechanical and the electronics and communications engineering department at the De La Salle University take advantage of the scorching heat to test run SIKAT, the country’s second solar-powered car.
Developed in partnership with the Philippine Solar Car Society, Inc. (PSCS), SIKAT is the worthy successor and improved version of SINAG, the first ever solar-powered car in the Philippines. Launched in December last year, SIKAT recently concluded a historic nationwide run, stopping at key universities and schools in Cebu, Bacolod, and Iloilo City in the Visayas, as well as Batangas, Angeles City, San Fernando and Laoag in Luzon.
“The series of provincial shows aimed to make more Filipinos aware of our ingenuity, our will to lead, our capability for technology, and our commitment to the use of clean, renewable energy,” said Ramon Agustines, PSCS Chairman. “We believe the best way to promote the benefits of the solar energy is by bringing them closer to the public and allowing them to know more about the solar car project more intimately.”
Currently, preparations are underway to make history one more time with SIKAT, when it competes in the 2011 World Solar Challenge – a grueling 3,000-kilometer race across the Australian Outback that pits some of the most advanced solar-powered cars across the globe against each other.
The “ray-ce” with solar energy
Held every two years, the World Solar Challenge has more than a 20-year history spanning nine races. The inaugural race was held in 1987, posing the ultimate challenge of designing and building a car capable of traveling across the Australian Continent on the power of sunlight.
Danish-born adventurer Hans Thostrup created the World Solar Challenge. After being the first person to circumnavigate the Australian continent in a 16-foot (4.9 m) open boat, he became aware of the necessity to explore sustainable energy as a replacement for the limited available fossil fuel, and participated in various competitions with fuel saving cars and trucks. Thostrup designed the world's first solar car, called “Quiet Achiever,” which traversed the 4,052-km distance between Sydney and Perth in 20 days. This was the precursor of the World Solar Challenge, which invites bright young engineers and scientists from around the world to pursue the ideals of sustainable transport.
The Philippines made its historical debut in the race with its entry, SINAG, in 2007. It finished a remarkable 11th place over-all from about 40 entries worldwide. The success of the SINAG in the solar car-racing world was an example of how the Philippines can be at par with the rest of the world in meeting a challenge which requires superior technology and skill.
“With SIKAT, there’s nothing to go but up for a better spot in the 2011 race, which is why we came up with a lighter, sleeker and faster solar car. However, we also thought, before vying for yet another success in the worldwide challenge, why not bring the technology closer to home first? Before showcasing the Filipinos’ technological capability to the whole world, why not present it to our own country first?,” said Dean Gaspillo, technical team head of DLSU-Manila.
Around the world, alarming climate change scenarios, shrinking reserves of fossil fuels and growing anxiety over future energy security have boosted investments in renewable energy. Governments across the globe have increased the focus on utilizing sustainable energy, such as solar power. In fact, the solar industry is growing incredibly fast and technology is developing at high speed that it is predicted the retail price of solar generated electricity will be competitive with that of electricity generated in conventional power plants.
The Philippines is known to have an abundance of bio-energy fuel sources at its disposal because of its extensive agricultural, forestry, and livestock industries. The Department of Energy (DOE) claims that the country is currently the second largest geothermal producer in the world, and has the largest wind power potential in Southeast Asia.
Dean Gaspillo said the country’s geographical location, being close to the equator, translates to a huge potential for tapping solar technology, one of the cleanest known methods of energy production. According to DOE, the Philippines is Southeast Asia’s largest solar manufacturing hub with a current annual capacity of 400 MW of solar cells.
SIKAT: Rising up to the challenge
With the abundance of solar energy in the Philippines, Ramon Agustines said PSCS believes solar energy can be the fuel of choice for transportation in the future. “However, despite our country’s huge potential, solar power remains to be an alien concept with most Filipinos. SIKAT aims to be a driving force, literally, to generate awareness among the youth and the general public aware of the benefits of solar technology, and our potential to lead in it, as a nation.”
Through this year’s efforts, especially the road show, PSCS used SIKAT to show just how practical solar-powered cars can be. Spectators on the provincial exhibits learned how solar cars such as SIKAT use photovoltaic cells (PVC), found in solar panels, which enables the panels to convert the sun’s energy into electricity that can be used to run the car.
“Overall, solar energy has many benefits. It is a limitless, renewable resource, even though we only have a window of time when we can collect it. This energy does not pollute the air, and is a versatile way to heat water and power different technologies. The solar car also works silently, so it does not add to the noise pollution already on the road. Most importantly, the energy is free and you don’t have a dependence on foreign oil,” said Jack Catalan, DLSU-Manila professor, Assistant technical head and electrical team head of Sikat.
Solar-powered cars have come a long way since the creation of the first solar cell in 1883. While improvements are being made to solar energy systems every year, it’s still a long road ahead before these cars become commercially viable for the public to drive on the highway.
However, PSCS believes we have to start somewhere – first with SINAG, now with SIKAT.
To showcase the capability of a solar-powered car, SIKAT underwent a series of test runs while embarking on the nationwide tour. Standing at 1.1 meters, the solar car cruised 112km/hour at 40 kms. from Clark South SCTEX toll to Tarlac exit. This is actually faster than its predecessor, SINAG, since it was built with less air resistance. Each solar cell on SIKAT’s surface can generate a peak power of 3.3 watts.
Currently, SIKAT is back in Manila to undergo more test runs in preparation for the World Solar Challenge. Partnering with the PSCS are their sponsors, De La Salle University, First Gen Corporation, Ford Motor Company Philippines, Motolite, Pilipinas Shell and Sunpower.
“We believe that with SIKAT’s historic nationwide tour, we have successfully highlighted the rich potential for solar energy applications in the Philippines to our own countrymen. SIKAT is not only set to generate great pride for the Philippines, and our inherent technical talent – it is a positive proof that we as a nation can stand alongside the rest of the world in developing solar power technology. In 2011, we can say, more than ever, that we are undertaking the global solar challenge as a nation, taking us one step closer to finally harnessing the full power of the sun,” Ramon Agustines said.

In its non-stop drive for a greener future, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) recently gathered almost 100 students from the country’s premier universities like Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Enderun Colleges, Miriam College, University of Asia and the Pacific and University of the Philippines to promote environmental awareness among the leaders of tomorrow. Honda partnered with AIESEC Philippines, a global student organization that gives importance in world issues and leadership development, to actively face environmental issues that our society is going through.
In advocating green awareness, Honda organized a fuel efficiency driving competition called Honda Challenge Cup in the morning and an environmental forum in the afternoon.
Faced with the hurdles of unstable fuel prices, depleting fuel supply and excessive exhaust emissions, Honda challenged the students to make every drop of fuel matter and to initiate change among them. As novice drivers, Honda taught these young students the correct driving techniques in achieving better fuel mileage. Honda appealed among the participants to regularly apply these techniques in their daily trips and eventually turn it into a habit. Driving every drop of fuel may sound tricky but can be easily achieved by considering three basic factors: vehicle, driver and fuel. A proper vehicle, equipped with advanced technologies like the i-VTEC engine, which is driven using proper techniques and is powered with high grade fuel that aids better combustion all contribute in optimizing fuel economy.
To demonstrate these practical driving tips under real-world situations, Honda provided City, Jazz, Civic and Accord models during Honda Challenge Cup. This fuel economy competition posed various challenges in both city and highway driving conditions using normal driving style and with a running airconditioning system. Using the basic formula, VEHICLE plus DRIVER plus FUEL equals FUEL ECONOMY, the students were able to accomplish remarkable results. Joseph Manguiat and Princess dela Paz of the University of the Philippines posted 30.74 km/li using the 1.3 li City with automatic transmission. Luis Martinez and Paolo de Dios of the University of Asia and the Pacific topped the 1.5 City class with 19.53 km/li fuel mileage. As for the Jazz category, Earl Go and Marc Go of Ateneo de Manila University led 1.3 liter class with 21.64 km/li while Vince Murga and Ico Rivera, also from Ateneo de Manila University, led 1.5 liter class with 25.90 km/li. Meanwhile, the team of Edmarl Tecson and Brian Lee of Enderun Colleges generated 23.65 km/li using 1.8 Civic AT and Horace Cimafranca and Nadaine Tongco of the University of the Philippines posted 15.12 km/li with the 3.5 liter Accord AT.
By noon time, a new set of students arrived to witness fruitful exchange of information during the environment forum. Having “Working together towards environmental Harmony” as theme, the forum not only aimed to provide a situational background on the environment but also meant to identify the course towards achieving a sustainable society. While it is true that mankind’s activities have posed severe damage to Mother Nature, humanity is also the key to the solution. Economic development and environmental preservation can, in fact, exist harmoniously with the combined efforts and commitment of the three sectors of society namely: the general public, private sector and the government. And in giving a holistic perspective on this matter, guest speakers of the forum represented different sectors of society. Dr. Gerry Bagtasa of the University of the Philippines shared the actual situation of air pollution in the country while Mr. Roy Cabonegro of Partido Kalikasan talked about the Clean Air Act. To represent the private sector, Honda shared its vision and technological advancements that are geared toward sustainable mobility. Being one of the largest engine manufacturers in the world, Honda takes the lead in developing products and technologies with minimal impact on the environment.
In conducting an environment awareness campaign such as this, Honda hopes to inspire change and ably equip these future leaders in facing bigger challenges. Honda always takes pleasure in spending time with the youth. Just like these students, Honda is driven with youthful passions, dreams and ambitions that have led in the creation of innovative mobility products for the benefit of society.
