Volvo Car Corporation's leadership in car safety is confirmed in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) 2012 Top Safety Pick award. The U.S. award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes - and no less than five

Volvo models - the C30, S60, S80, XC60 and XC90 - earned a Top Safety Pick. Volvo is the only European luxury brand with five awarded models in the new IIHS report.

"The risk of being involved in an accident or being injured in one of our latest car models has been reduced with more than two thirds compared with a Volvo from the 1970s. Now, we keep on moving towards our safety vision that nobody should die or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020", says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Corporation.

IIHS Top Safety Pick is based on four accident scenario results*:

• Frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40mph (64km/h) frontal offset crash tests.

• Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph (50 km/h). The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV.

• To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the car roof must withstand a force of four times the vehicle's weight before reaching five inches of crush.

• Rear crash protection is rated using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph (32 km/h).

Outstanding U.S. NCAP rating

Volvo Car Corporation's dedication to car safety has been recognized in several recent studies.

The XC60 is also the only SUV crossover with an IIHS Top Safety Pick and an overall 5 star U.S. NCAP rating. In the 2010 test, the XC60 received 5 stars in all individual crash tests, including 5 stars for the driver and 5 stars for the passenger in the frontal collision as well as 5 stars in both side tests.

Auto brake results in fewer accidents

Earlier this year, the benefits of the groundbreaking City Safety technology - featuring automatic braking in low speed situations - were documented in another IIHS report stating a reduction of the collision frequency with up to 22 percent. The IIHS study of insurance claims involving a Volvo XC60 shows that City Safety reduces the costs for personal injury claims with 51 percent - while vehicle repair costs were lowered by more than 20 percent.

A similar study by the Swedish insurance company Volvia shows that Volvo cars equipped with automatic braking are involved in 22 percent fewer rear end accidents than cars without auto brake.

Many critics assumed that the Volvo Car Corporation entered the SUV segment too late when the Volvo XC90 was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2002. Instead, the ingenious XC90 revitalized the whole segment by successfully addressing all the problems of earlier SUVs.

In 2005, annual XC90 sales peaked at 86,000 vehicles, making it Sweden's most valuable export product.

"The XC90 was the first of the next-generation SUVs. Its blend of SUV roominess, true passenger-car qualities and groundbreaking safety features made it an instant success in a segment that at that time was tainted by several issues," says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.

Five world-firsts

The XC90 featured five automotive world-firsts when it was introduced in 2002:

• Roll Stability Control (RSC), using a gyro-sensor to detect and counteract the risk of a rollover.

• Inflatable side curtains for all three rows of seats.

• An integrated sliding center booster seat for children in the second row.

• Seatbelts with "pre-tensioners" for all seats.

• Dolby 5.1 Pro Logic II surround sound stereo system featuring a 305-watt Alpine amplifier and 12 premium speakers.

Rollover test in front of the world media

This world-class safety level was demonstrated in an unusually tangible way when the Volvo Car Corporation invited the world press to watch a violent rollover test with the XC90 outside the state-of-the-art Safety Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The safety level is also emphasized in the Volvo Car Corporation's research. The accident investigation files include remarkably few accidents where XC90 occupants have been killed or sustained severe injuries.

Other distinctive advantages

The XC90 also boasted a number of other distinctive advantages:

• The possibility to create a flat load floor area behind the front seats.

• Passenger car ride supported by electronic All Wheel Drive.

• A lower cross-member in the front with the task of activating the oncoming car's safety systems in the event of a collision.

• Class-leading fuel economy.

"Being Volvo we just had to offer a sensible and safe alternative to the first-generation SUVs.

The XC90 took the segment into a whole new dimension. It was a unique vehicle when it was launched and even now, ten years later, no competitor vehicle offers such a complete package," says Hans Wikman, who has since retired.

"We have recently introduced an upgraded version of the XC90, which is still one of our best-selling models. It also inspired the development of the extremely popular XC60. Now we are working on developing an all-new version of the XC90," says Stefan Jacoby.

More than 110 international awards

Since its introduction, the XC90 has received over 110 awards around the globe. Almost a year from its world premiere in Detroit, the Volvo XC90 was named North American Truck of the Year. This competition was judged by 49 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada representing newspapers, magazines, and digital media. The other highlights of the list (available if you click Models and XC90 - Awards in the top bar) confirm the greatness of this model.

Exceptionally designed around you, the Volvo XC90 is available locally with a diesel variant and a 3.2L petrol engine. The race is on to own this award winning piece of luxury SUV with up to 20% savings until December 25, 2011 only. Volvo Philippines celebrates with enthusiasm as the Volvo S60 was crowned Car of the Year in the Middle East at the Middle East Motor Awards 2011 (MEMA). The jury praised the Volvo S60 as a well-balanced and stylish luxury sedan featuring a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine and leading-edge safety technology.

MEMA, which was held for the second consecutive year, is regarded as the largest, most prestigious and only independent award for the automotive industry in the region. It is organized by Expo Centre Sharjah in the United Arab Republic. The jury is made up of leading motoring journalists and professional racing drivers from ten countries, including Lebanon, Oman, Jordan, Egypt and Syria.

"It is very rewarding to receive the Car of the year in the Middle East. It once again confirms the success of the Volvo S60. It is a car that well matches the customers' demands in these markets which is key to our forward success in the region", says Wim Maes, President Volvo Cars Overseas Corporation.

The nomination and assessment process takes more than eight months during which all 19 jury members fill in individual result cards for the nominated cars. Among the parameters taken into account are design, safety features and value for money.

The jury also noted that the 2011 Volvo S60 was the first car launched in the Middle East with Volvo Pedestrian Detection - a safety system that actively searches for and spots pedestrians in the roadway and automatically applies the brakes to protect them.

Locally, the Volvo S60 is available in three variants- the powerful 3.0L T6 with 304hp and 440Nm of torque, the 2.0L Powershift transmission boosted by a 203hp and 300Nm of torque and the fuel efficient 1.6L T4 with a dynamic 180hp and 240Nm of torque.

Lauded for uncompromising performance and safety, it’s about time you drive one.

How about integrating the very best properties from three different car types into one, single attractive sports wagon? By simply pressing a button you can choose which car you want to drive:

• An electric car with a range of up to 50 kilometers.

• A high-efficiency hybrid with carbon dioxide emissions averaging just 49g/km.

• A muscular fun-to-drive car with a combined output of 215+70 horsepower*, 440+200 Nm* of torque and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h of just 6.9 seconds.

Allow us to present the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid. Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid will reach the showrooms 2012.

"The second-generation hybrid is the perfect choice for the uncompromising buyer who wants a superbly carbon dioxide-lean car packed with driving pleasure," says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

The front wheels of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid will be driven by a five-cylinder 2.4-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel, which produces 215 horsepower and maximum torque of 440Nm. The car features a six-speed automatic transmission.

The rear axle is powered by an electric motor producing 70 horsepower. The electric motor receives its power from a 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack, located under the load floor. The sophisticated and exceptionally compact battery pack consists of 10 modules with 20 cells in each module. It has an integrated computer that monitors and compares the temperature and charge level in each of the 200 cells. The battery pack also has an integrated water-cooling system, which is connected to the car's climate control unit.

Three driving modes - three cars in one

The driver chooses the preferred driving mode via three buttons on the instrument panel: Pure, Hybrid or Power. The interaction between diesel and electric power is handled via a control system.

"In order to get true car enthusiasts to think green, you have to offer them the opportunity to drive with low carbon dioxide emissions without taking away the adrenaline rush that promotes genuine driving pleasure. The V60 Plug-in Hybrid has all the traditional properties of a genuine sportswagon. What we've done is to spice it up with spearhead technology that allows the driver to choose: zero emissions, high-efficiency hybrid or full-on performance. Just select the mode that suits best," says Stefan Jacoby.

The different temperaments

The Pure, Hybrid and Power driving modes give the V60 Plug-in Hybrid three different temperaments:

• In Pure the car runs only on its electric motor as much as possible. If the battery has been recharged using electricity from a renewable source, the driving range is up to 50km with zero emissions of carbon dioxide. Battery range varies with terrain, climate and driving style.

• Hybrid is the default mode whenever the car is started. The diesel engine and electric motor interact to provide the optimal balance between driving pleasure and low environmental impact. Emissions of CO2 (NEDC, Combined driving cycle for certification) are 49g/km, corresponding to diesel fuel consumption of 1.9L/100 km. The car's total range is up to 1200km. The driver has the possibility to key in the planned route's distance (short, medium or long) in the car setup menu, The control system calculates the balance between diesel and electric power to obtain the lowest possible CO2 emissions for the given distance.

• In Power the technology is optimized to give the car the best possible performance. The diesel engine and electric motor have a combined power output 215+70 horsepower and maximum torque of 440+200Nm. The electric motor's lightning-quick torque delivery contributes to the car's 0 to 100km/h acceleration time of 6.9 seconds. The majority of all European car drivers cover less than 50km a day, for instance to and from work. On longer trips, the diesel engine gives the car the same range as a conventional hybrid.

Better traction with All Wheel Drive

Pushing the AWD (All Wheel Drive) button in the center stack activates electric four-wheel drive. Instead of the mechanical power transmission of the conventional AWD system, it is the central control unit that manages torque distribution to the diesel-driven front wheels and the electrically powered rear axle. The electric AWD is designed to offer the driver better traction when starting and driving on slippery road surfaces such as snow or mud.

However, due to the electric motor's lower output, the torque level available for the rear wheels is limited and the AWD system is active in speeds up to 100 km/h. When AWD is activated the diesel engine is running continuously and the High Voltage Generator maintains a sufficient charge level on the battery pack that feeds the motor on the rear axle with power. Since the electrical All Wheel Drive is active on driver demand only it is more fuel efficient than a conventional, permanent AWD system

Save battery power for later

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid offers the driver the option to save battery capacity in order to have enough charge for driving on clean electricity later, for instance in an urban low emission zone. When Save For Later is activated, the car makes sure that the battery has a sufficient charge level for another pure drive. If necessary, the High Voltage Generator recharges the battery in order to maintain a sufficient charge level for another "Pure" drive. The aim is that the Save For Later mode should secure enough battery capacity for approximately 20 kilometer drive on pure electricity.

Two-step braking system

The two-step braking system is another intelligent feature in the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid. When the driver pushes the brake pedal, the system initially brakes the car by controlling the rear axle motor. This braking energy is used to regenerate the car's battery pack. The mechanical brakes are only activated when the situation requires more braking power than the rear axle can handle.

Recharging at home

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is recharged via a regular power socket (230V/6A, 10A or 16A) at home or in a parking lot. The charging time depends on the level of the current. A full 10A charge takes 4.5 hours. The time is shortened to 3.5 hours with 16A, while a charge in a 6A socket takes 7.5 hours.

To get a comfortable start of the journey, the car driver has the possibility to preheat or cool the passenger compartment during the recharging process. This also means that more battery capacity can be used for powering the car.

The pre-conditioning also includes the possibility to cool the batteries. The battery pack has an ideal working temperature of 20-30°C. This means that the pre-cooling is highly important for maximizing the charging capacity and thereby the driving range on each charge. The timing is programmed via the car's setup menu or remotely via a smart phone application*.

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid has two heating possibilities. When running on electricity a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) air heater is used. The car also has a Fuel Operated Diesel heater.

Volvo Philippines is one with Volvo Car Corporation as it takes the next bold step in the evolution of the company's upcoming large luxury sedan. The Concept You, revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, combines a sleek coupe-like exterior with a luxurious high-tech interior that keeps the driver in command via intuitive smart pad technology. Concept gives the global car buying public another exciting glimpse of the Volvo Car Corporation's future. With a full interior, Concept You allows luxury sedan customers to fully experience the craftsmanship and intuitive technology that will be the hallmark of future Volvos.
"The new Concept You roofline stretches all the way back to the tail lamps - creating that dynamic fastback look that is very much in vogue among European car buyers at the moment," says Peter Horbury, Vice President Design at the Volvo Car Corporation.
Touch-control cockpit and pure craftsmanship The luxurious interior of the Concept You features a blend of intuitive smart pad technology and first-class craftsmanship. "The Concept You explores new territories in our search for the ultimate intuitive car that makes the owners manual a thing of the past. Smart phones and smart pads have brought mobile infotainment into a new era. Here, we use a number of touch-screens to replace buttons and controls in order to make the driver totally connected, totally in control. The technology also helps us to create a refreshingly uncluttered interior," explains Peter Horbury. The Concept You control center consists of four main areas; a digital Driver Information Monitor (DIM), a head-up display on the windscreen, a touch-screen in the upper part of the center console and a touch-screen between the two individual rear seats. The wood/leather steering wheel has aluminum and glass paddles with integrated touch-screens. The touch-screen in the upper part of the centre console remains in sleeping mode until the driver looks at it. A hidden infrared camera registers the eye movements and information is displayed on the screen. Another sensor registers hand movements and triggers the Infotainment system's control mode. The possibilities vary depending on whether the screen is approached by the driver or by the front passenger. "Certain functions, such as surfing the Web, are only accessible from the passenger side while the car is rolling. The technology knows who is the present operator and adapts itself automatically," says Peter Horbury. The driver can "flip" data from the central touch-screen to the head-up display - and can exchange data with the rear passengers. A light guide in the free-floating centre console indicates file transfer. Unique air-powered sound system* The Infotainment system also integrates a high-end sound system from Alpine. It features the unique "FreshAir" subwoofer - a not yet released technology that uses the air outside the car to create the ultimate listening experience. The sound system consists of small, optimized units that considerably cut weight - while still producing a better sound than today's systems. Comfortable and cultivated The interior is dedicated to offer design-driven customers a comfortable, cultivated, Scandinavian inspired environment that is also user-focused and refreshingly uncomplicated. Every detail has been chosen with the customer experience in focus. The interior is driver-orientated at the front and comfortably relaxed in the rear. The dynamic feel and dark color scheme in the front seats fades seamlessly towards the rear until it fully transforms into a light rear seat haven of calmness. The rear seat passengers are embraced by pure comfort, as if their favorite lounge were magically integrated into the car. The interior moulds into the rear seat and becomes part of the seating environment. The Volvo Car Corporation has partnered with several other famous brands in order to create a genuine feeling of luxury with the right Scandinavian touch. Leather, suede and suit fabric* The four individual seats, inspired by ultra-comfortable chairs, blend chrome-free leather from Bridge of Wear with Dinamica ecological suede. The off-black front seats have suede in the center to create optimal grip. The soft beige rear seats are designed for pure comfort with leather in the center and suede on the sides. The Concept You design also integrates the luxury qualities of a tailor made suit into the car. The back of the front seats and the door panels feature exclusive Italian fabric and designs from Swedish fashion house Oscar Jacobson. The designers have also been generous with large, handcrafted pieces of walnut - accompanied by leather panels, Dinamica suede roof lining and carefully chosen aluminum details. Hand-tufted wool carpets The wooden floor, which echoes Scandinavian homes, is covered with a specially designed hand-tufted carpet from world-famous Swedish brand Kasthall. Just like the rest of the interior it fades from dark in the front to light in the rear. The front texture has a sporty firmness, while the rear part of the carpet is luxuriously soft. "The interior is full of classic forms, materials and textures, used with a twist to create a special contemporary luxury experience. It is exceptionally refined, yet with all the simplistic assets that make Volvo champions of the uncomplicated," explains Peter Horbury. He concludes: "We are carving out a unique position among the luxury car makers with our special kind of Scandinavian Design. It will be unmatched in performance, technology and craftsmanship, but without superficiality or complication." Inspiration from Georg Jensen The Concept You is finished in a light blue, liquid metal paint from DuPont. The ventilated disc brakes are developed by Volvo's racing specialists Polestar. The car's fast silhouette is emphasized by the 21-inch polished aluminum wheels with a twisted twin-spoke design and tires from Pirelli (275/30/21). Up front, the Concept You grille - which has a more classic appearance than the Concept Universe - features details with the same beautifully polished craftsmanship. "The design of the wheels, the grille and details in the innovative headlamps have been inspired by the exquisite works of world-famous Danish design house Georg Jensen. Their precious items capture the essence of Scandinavian design. Uncluttered, organic surfaces and superb craftsmanship that radiate timeless luxury," says Peter Horbury. He adds: "This eternal beauty of Georg Jensen design is what we are aiming for with the whole concept car. Just like the finest luxury goods, this design should feel handcrafted and durable enough to stand the test of time." The dipped beam comes from LED lamps in four "ice blocks" on top of the high beam lights. The "ice blocks" are installed with the same technology that jewelers use for mounting precious stones.

Volvo Philippines announces Volvo Car Corporation’s effort to combine fuel-cutting start/stop technology with an automatic gearbox. The new start/stop technology, which initially is available together with the 2.0-liter D3 turbo diesel, cuts carbon dioxide (CO2) emission with 10g/km - translated into 0.4 liters less fuel consumption per 100km.

From early September 2011, the six-speed automatic gearbox with start/stop becomes available in the D3 versions of four Volvo models: S60, V60, V70 and S80.

"Continuously reducing CO2 emissions from conventional powertrains is an important part of our DRIVe Towards Zero emissions. It is the most effective way to cut CO2 throughout our model range in the short term. This work is running parallel with our innovative focus on electrification technologies," says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Car Corporation.

Combining start/stop with automatic gearbox is a larger technology challenge than the manual start/stop version already available in most Volvo models. The engine must restart instantly when the driver moves the right foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

Agile response

"We have focused on achieving the same agile feeling as you get with today's conventional automatic. The response is so seamless that it feels like the car starts accelerating immediately when the engine restarts," explains Peter Mertens.

The technology uses brake pressure measurement to trigger when to stop and start the engine. The start/stop system is programmed to shut down the engine immediately when the car reaches a standstill (0km/h). An electric pump keeps oil pressure up in the automatic gearbox while the engine is stopped. The system also includes an improved starter engine.

Downsized five-cylinder engine

The two-liter D3 produces 163hp and 400Nm of torque. The five-cylinder 2-liter turbo diesel was introduced 2010 in the all-new Volvo S60. It is now available throughout Volvo Car Corporation's model range.

The five-cylinder D3 is in principle the same engine as the well-established 2.4-liter diesel, but its displacement has been reduced with a shorter stroke to optimize fuel consumption.

The piezoelectric fuel injectors minimize consumption with exceptionally rapid and precise injection pulses under high pressure. This promotes extremely efficient combustion. In order to give the car better driving properties, the turbocharger has been fine-tuned to provide high torque from low revs.

Lower fuel consumption

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (EU Combined) with automatic gearbox and start/stop is now down to:

S60 5.4L/100 km 142g/km
V60 5.7L/100 km 149g/km
V70 5.7L/100 km 149g/km
S80 5.6L/100 km 148g/km

No other concept car in the history of Volvo Car Corporation has meant more for the company's technological advancement than the Volvo SCC (Safety Concept Car). Ten years after its 2001 world premiere in Detroit, the Safety Concept Car can look back on a fantastic "career".

It was the starting point of the company's leadership in active safety. About 15 of the advanced technical solutions found in today's Volvo models first saw the light of day in the Volvo SCC. From the design viewpoint the SCC also inspired the design of the successful Volvo C30 model. The Volvo SCC is an early example of the cumulative effect of close cooperation between Volvo Cars' designers and engineers.

"Concept vehicles are usually design or technology studies that give car buyers a taste of the future. The Volvo SCC, however, has added impact because it was both attractive and high-tech. It is an early example of how we design our cars around our customers' wishes, needs and limitations," says Volvo Car Corporation's President and CEO Stefan Jacoby.

One of the project group's most important goals was to demonstrate the possibility of combining world-class safety with a sporty, sleek shape all packaged in a relatively small car. "When we began work on the concept car at the end of the 1990s, Volvo was still primarily known for making family cars designed to protect their occupants in a collision. The SCC signaled the start of a new approach which enhanced safety for the occupants, where the car's most important safety task is to help avoid dangerous situations and accidents in the first place," explains Östen Strandberg, who was responsible for the development of the Volvo SCC.

He adds: "With the drivable Safety Concept Car, we showed that all these smart, collision-preventive technological solutions were within reach. It is fair to say that the success of the SCC project triggered Volvo Car Corporation's groundbreaking dedication to active safety systems."

Star in Detroit

The Volvo SCC generated enormous interest at its unveiling to a massive audience on the Volvo Cars stand at Detroit Auto Show in January 2001. That autumn, the world press had the opportunity to test-drive the concept car in a closed-off section of Seville International Airport in southern Spain.

The following year, Swedish Prime Minster Göran Persson was one of many people that tested the car - and later the car went on a nationwide tour of the USA, reaping immense praise from coast to coast.

"The attention it attracted was actually greater than we dared hope. I'm convinced that this was largely because the SCC was attractive as well as technically advanced - but without being complicated. That's exactly the combination that echoes Volvo's approach and it is still our strength," says Mikael Edvardsson, one of the engineers responsible of the technology integrated into the Safety Concept Car.

From concept to production

In 2002 work got under way on translating the technical studies showcased in the Volvo SCC into production-ready safety technology. One year later, Volvo Car Corporation initiated the project that would result in the world debut of the Volvo C30 in Paris in 2006.

Today - ten years after the premiere success - around 15 of the technological solutions presented in the Volvo SCC can be found in Volvo Car Corporation's model range. Technological solutions that now help drivers the world over avoid both minor incidents and major collisions.

"One small but revealing example of just how much of the SCC made it into series production is the fact that even the car's livery became reality - the paintwork of the one-off SCC bears a remarkable resemblance to the Orange Flame colour that you can specify for your Volvo C30," relates Östen Strandberg.

There's an exception to every rule, however. One of the SCC's most attention-grabbing features never made it into production: the Eiffel Tower-like see-through A-pillars remained a part of the C30 project, but eventually made way for a conventional alternative owing to obstacles when it comes to strength, build complexity and cost.

SCC technology in today's Volvo models

Here is a list of the technological solutions that made it from the Volvo SCC to some or all of Volvo Car Corporation's current models:

• Forward collision warning - today in its third generation with Pedestrian Detection, Collision Warning and Full Auto Brake. In addition, there is the ground-braking low-speed system, City Safety, which is fitted as standard to several Volvo models.

• Information projected on the windscreen - today the head-up display is part of the Collision Warning system.

• Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) - Technology that monitors vehicles in the "blind spot" and alerts the driver.

• Lane Departure Warning and Driver Alert - Warning system to alert the driver to the risk of straying from the lane. Today known as.

• Cruise control that maintains a set distance behind the vehicle in front. The present ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) operates all the way down to standstill in cars with automatic transmission.

• Flashing brake lights during hard braking - today known as Emergency Brake Lights.

• Safety cameras - today there are integrated reversing camera and grille-mounted camera offering drivers a 180-degree field of vision (accessory). A camera is also a key component in the Pedestrian Detection and Collision Warning system.

• Advanced headlights that follow the curvature of the road as the car turns – today Active Bending Lights.

• Further-developed HMI (Human Machine Interface) - now Volvo Sensus.

• Height-adjustable rear seat. Present today in the integrated two-stage child booster cushions.

• Protection for pedestrians - today this system is found as the energy-absorbing front structure and bonnet and in Pedestrian Detection.

• Steering wheel adjustable for height and reach - fitted today as standard.

• Passive unlocking and engine starting - today Keyless Go

• Communication with the car via mobile phone - today via a newly developed Mobile Application that was introduced in spring 2011.

Ahead of its time

Mikael Edvardsson sums up: "When the Volvo SCC was unveiled, it was packed with sensational technology. Bearing in mind the interest of the car-buying public in active safety systems today, it's easy to see that the concept car was way ahead of its time. It's evidence that Volvo is and will remain at the cutting edge when it comes to automotive safety."

Bosch remains confident on gradual transition to electromobility

Manila - Robert Bosch Inc. (Philippines), local subsidiary of Germany’s Bosch Group and the largest automotive technology parts supplier in the domestic aftermarket, showcased its local line of Gasoline Direct Injection and Diesel Common Rail Injection components at the second Philippine Energy Efficiency Forum. The Bosch Group is engaged in the development and production of fuel components and systems as well as alternative drives that enable vehicles to operate more efficiently and emit significantly lower CO2. Bosch aims to reduce the fuel consumption of internal-combustion engines by another third - considering that some 95 percent of all new vehicles in 2020 will still be powered by diesel and gasoline engines.

“While continuing to increase the efficiency of today’s internal combustion engines Bosch also researches new technologies to reduce the cost of electromobility in the future,” said Joseph Hong, Managing Director of Robert Bosch Inc. (Philippines). “The future of mobility belongs to the electric drive. The only question is when,” Hong further explained to a selected group of media during the forum.

Investing on e-mobility

On the global front, Bosch invests 400 million euros each year in projects related to powertrain electrification while some 800 engineers are working to make the vision of e-mobility a reality. Development work, however, only shows one side of the coin. Convincing drivers of the benefits of electric cars poses another major challenge, which requires presenting customers with market-ready solutions today.

The e-bike, which is already available today, shows the benefits of electromobility to the mass market. 18 brands of e-bikes are already equipped with Bosch drive systems. While traction batteries for long ranges remain expensive, it makes sense to think about how and where the battery technology can be applied in the meantime. On the road to e-mobility, small steps are equally important for future success.

The plug-in hybrid vehicle, which is powered by a relatively compact and affordable battery for short ranges, can be plugged in and the battery recharged from the electricity main. Combined with a gasoline or diesel engine for longer trips, the plug-in hybrid could soon be a realistic option. It could be the solution for a family that runs errands in the city using the electric drive, and then visits relatives a few hundred kilometers away using the internal-combustion engine.

Technically speaking, a combined system such as this calls for broad systems expertise in all types of drive systems – the very kind of networked knowledge that a global supplier like Bosch brings to the table. This broad-ranging know-how has enabled the company to think beyond choosing between conventional and electric drives to come up with technologies that combine both.

A broad range of drive systems

Even in 2020, a lithium-ion battery with a range of 200 kilometers will cost more than PHP300 thousand (5,000 euros). The further development of lithium-ion batteries will play a decisive role here. Together with its partner Samsung SDI, Bosch manufactures such batteries. In the long term, the energy density of such batteries will have to at least double.

The Bosch product portfolio includes electric motors and power electronics as well. With an investment of 600 million euros, the automotive supplier is building a new wafer fab in Reutlingen, Germany to produce its own power semiconductors. This illustrates that Bosch corporate strategy comes not only from broad-based expertise, but also from in-depth technical know-how. By 2013, Bosch will be supplying 12 automakers with components and systems required for some 20 electromobility-related projects.

Full-cycle approach to harnessing clean energy
There are many arguments to support the assertion that the transition to electromobility will be gradual and will see a number of specific solutions for specific markets. Until the full realization of electromobility, companies will need to pool production and standardize components, in addition to reducing costs. Small examples like standardizing plug-in connections show a lot of cost-saving potential. Economies of scale, on the other hand, can be achieved through cooperation between carmakers, and also between carmakers and suppliers. This is why Daimler and Bosch have decided to join forces to develop and manufacture electric motors for electric vehicles.

“The full transition to electromobility in the future will only make sense if energy is harnessed from renewable sources,” said Hong. “It will not make sense if the consumption of fossil fuel is only passed on to power producers.” Bosch is also active in the development of core components for multi-megawatt wind turbines and solar photovoltaics which are locally categorized as “new” renewable energy sources.

- Top title ‘Best of Best’ secured in the category for overall brand design
- Three Kia models triumph in the category for Exterior Design
- New competition promoted by the German Design Council

(SEOUL) July 20, 2011 -- Kia Motors is one of the main winners in the first-ever Automotive Brand Contest. This new international brand and design competition was organised by the Rat für Formgebung (German Design Council), which is also
responsible for the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (German Design Award).

The judging panel of the first Automotive Brand Contest declared Kia Motors the worthy winner in two categories. In the Brand Design category, where strategy and focus of the brand’s overall design is rated, Kia was ranked ‘Best of Best’.

For the Exterior category, in which the design of the vehicle itself is the centre of attention, three Kia models were picked as winners: the compact Sportage CUV, the forthcoming Rio B-segment model (on sale from Fall 2011 in most global markets)
and the all-new, athletic D-segment Kia Optima sedan. The Kia Optima and Kia Sportage have already been awarded prestigious design prizes: the red dot award (Kia Optima: ‘best of the best’) and the iF product design award.

“We are all exceedingly proud that Kia Motors has done so well in this new competition, which is very important within the automotive industry,” says Kia’s Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer. “By changing our basic design focus, we have given our brand a face, a distinctive identity.

“The ‘Best of Best’ title for Kia’s new design identity in the Brand Design category is a great endorsement of the creative and professional work done by our entire international design team. The latest awards conferred on the Sportage and Optima,
and the very first one to go to our latest model, the Rio, reflect the continuity of our efforts to uphold our own high design standards. All four awards are a fantastic acknowledgement of our strategy to position design as a core Kia brand promise,” adds Schreyer.

Three Kia award winning models: design that points to the future

The fourth-generation Kia Rio, which celebrated its world premiere at the 2011

Geneva International Motor Show, is not a further development of its predecessor, but a powerful new personality in its own right. By clearly moving away from its past, the new B-segment model epitomizes Kia’s transformation to a design and quality-led brand. The wedge-shaped profile and sleek side windows lend the newcomer dynamic flair, while the balance between window graphics, wheelbase and the vehicle’s overall proportions creates a ‘premium’ impression rarely found in
this segment. Developed with the global market in mind, the Rio will be available in Europe in both three-door and five-door bodystyles, with four-door and five-door bodystyles offered in most other markets.

The newly developed Kia Optima is a model that bears no resemblance to the brand’s earlier D-segment vehicles. Peter Schreyer headed the design of the athletic sedan at the Kia design centres in Frankfurt, Germany and Irvine, USA. Immediately
following its launch in the Korean market in mid-2010, the Kia Optima topped the D-segment sales chart there – the first Kia model ever to do so.

With its third-generation of the Sportage, Kia has given the popular compact CUV a complete makeover. The Sportage combines all the key off-road features – raised ground clearance, commanding driving position and heightened sense of security –
with a sleek and urban-friendly design. In Europe, the most eco-friendly version, the Sportage 1.7 CRDi 2WD featuring a start/stop system, achieves a CO2 emissions rating of just 135 g/km.

Winners to be presented at IAA motor show in Frankfurt

The Rat für Formgebung (German Design Council), organiser of the newly instituted Automotive Brand Contest, was founded in 1953 as an initiative of the German Federal Parliament, and today counts among the world’s leading centers of excellence for communication and knowledge transfer in the field of design.

Among the patrons of this independent institution are 170 companies from both Germany and abroad. With its competitions, such as Designpreis Deutschland (Germany’s highest official design award), its exhibitions, as well as its conferences,
seminars and workshops, the German Design Council’s purpose is to spread the word about good industrial design to a broad public. The Automotive Brand Contest is open to all companies in the automobile industry and their partners, in the supply industry and in the fields of design and brand communications.

This first year’s winners of the new competition will be presented with their awards at the IAA in Frankfurt on Automotive Designers’ Night, 13 September 2011 (first press day).

MANILA, Philippines, 8 July, 2011 – Ford Group Philippines (FGP) kicks off its comprehensive and UN-recognized road safety initiatives under the company’s global Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) campaign this month. This program is part of Ford’s ongoing commitment to promote and improve driver safety in the Philippines.

Ford is planning a series of day camps and seminars throughout the year and aims to have 2,000 licensed drivers participate in the DSFL program. Training will focus on safe, smart and fuel efficient driving skills as well as providing handy tips on vehicle maintenance.

Driving Skills for Life offers free courses, both classroom training and practical learning, to help educate drivers of all ages on safe driving practices. The program has been customized for the Philippines to reflect the local driving environment and road conditions. Since 2005, Ford’s DSFL program has had more than 20,000 participants.

The Driving Skills for Life program also includes seminars for Ford employees, licensed student drivers, customers, corporate fleet accounts and automotive enthusiast such as car clubs. “Our commitment to our customers does not end with our products. We are also dedicated to encouraging people to become responsible and safe drivers. Since road safety is an important issue and concern in the Philippines, we aim to minimize road traffic accidents and promote economical and fuel-efficient driving through the Driver Skills for Life education campaign,” said Anika Salceda-Wycoco, FGP’s AVP for Communications.

This year’s first DSFL seminar was held recently with customers at Ford EDSA dealership. A total of 21 Ford owners and 9 dealership employees participated in the session that was conducted in collaboration with Ford’s DSFL partner, Tuason Racing School (TRS), and featured interactive activities on safe, smart and fuel efficient driving techniques. Participants were also given the opportunity to drive and apply their classroom learning’s.

“There are different causes of motoring accidents every year. Speeding, drunk driving and not following road signs and regulations are just some of them. We need to understand that road safety is a full time commitment and licensed drivers should always keep an open eye and undistracted mind when on the road,” advises JP Tuason of TRS.

Customers who participated in the Driving Skills for Life seminar were not only pleased with vehicles they test drove, but also with Ford’s admirable initiative.

“As part of my family’s business I transport heavy appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners using my Ford Ranger, my truck has been with me for over a year now and it hasn’t failed me once. After learning so much from the seminar, I feel confident again knowing that I am well-equipped with road safety knowledge which can help me avoid traffic violations as well as road accidents,” explains Ryan Vincent Mitra.

“I really learned a lot from this session. I’m glad that I had the chance to practice my newly-learned skills and apply it to real driving situations. This will help me prepare for or prevent possible dangers on the road,” adds Fiesta-owner Jocephine Yao.

“The Driving Skills for Life program is an ideal way for Ford to leverage our global expertise to help make a difference here in the Philippines. We hope to encourage more Filipinos to practice safe driving every time they are on the road,” Wycoco added.
