The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and EuAuto Technology Limited (EuAuto) today jointly announced the official launch of their home-grown electric vehicle mycar in Hong Kong. The launching ceremony was held at PolyU campus with Mr John Tsang Chun-wah, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, Prof. Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU, and Mr Peter Sun, Chairman of EuAuto Technology Limited as the officiating guests.

With its body designed by internationally renowned Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, mycar has obtained the World Manufacturer Identification (WMI) Code earlier this year and it went on sales in many European countries including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Austria and Denmark.

It is the first Hong Kong-developed vehicle which fully complied with European standards, and also the first home-grown vehicle to hit the international market.

This year mycar has successfully met the roadworthiness requirements stipulated by the Government’s Transport Department and has recently been granted the vehicle type-approval as a private car. It is now available for sale in Hong Kong on the condition of travelling on roads with a speed limit at or under 50km/h.

The NEV version of mycar available in the local market has also been on sales in the European market. It can travel a distance of 110km on flat roads and can reach a maximum speed of 64km/h. It requires six to eight hours to be fully charged, which can be done from any regular household socket. It is capable of running on the road for 20 km and takes only 1.5 hour to recharge fully again.

PolyU President Prof. Tong said at the ceremony, “PolyU prides itself on its quality application-oriented R&D and close ties with business and industry. The development of mycar has truly testified to the practical value and commercial potential of PolyU’s R&D pursuits. Not only does mycar go in line with the Government’s policy address in promoting the use of electric vehicles, but also turns over a new leaf in pioneering the advancement of Hong Kong’s automotive industry.”

“Before EuAuto, no automobile manufacturing business has ever been developed in Hong Kong. It was a dream to build a micro car in Hong Kong back in 2003. To make this dream come true, we know we need and we do contribute our greatest effort to engage expertise around the world. With the magic touch of the famous Italian designer Mr Giugiaro on the styling, complimented with the research and expertise from our strategic partners, PolyU, with supports from various industry partners, government, mycar team expertise from around the world: Italy, France, UK, Canada, Australia, Philippines, China and Hong Kong. This product is now able to balance the European stylish design and good quality at an affordable price to customers all over the world. Our dream of having a home-grown electric vehicle has finally come true!” said Mr Sun, Chairman of EuAuto Technology Limited.

The environmentally-friendly, zero-emission mycar will be sold at HK$97,000. To promote the use of electric vehicles, the HKSAR Government has exempted the First Registration Tax Waiver. The annual license fee costs only HK$440.

Both PolyU and EuAuto attach great importance to the further advancement of mycar. Building on the success of mycar, the team will keep up with their research and development efforts to enhance its performance and seek to integrate advanced technology to build a better electric vehicle in the near future.

At the beginning of next year, lithium-battery-driven and upgrade versions of mycar will be launched. There will be a significant improvement for the vehicle in terms of mileage and speed, in order to meet the expectation of Hong Kong’s Eco-car drivers.

In addition to PolyU's backup, mycar has received a funding of HK$2 million from the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission to support its further research and development.

Can fun driving be safe? Or, conversely, can safe driving be fun?

For Honda, at least, the answer to these questions is a resounding “yes” and more. Because for Honda, safety does not stop with the vehicle occupants. Safety extends to other vehicles’ passengers and to pedestrians. This is the essence of Honda’s tenet “Safety for Everyone”.

Safety for Drivers and Passengers

Known for their sporty and agile models, Honda makes sure that their cars’ safety features won’t be left behind either. In fact, Honda believes that fun driving go hand in hand with safe driving. Some of the features that make Honda a fun car to drive also make it a safe car to ride.

Honda’s safety measures can be classified into two: active and passive. Active safety measures are features that are manually or automatically activated in response to a safety problem or abnormal condition. Passive safety, on the other hand, involves measures that operate on its own.

Let’s start with Honda’s active safety features. Many customers associate excellent steering, handling and braking with driving performance but these qualities can also be attributed to Honda’s advance suspension design, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Traction Control System (TCS), and its anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD).

Stability and control starts with the suspension and Honda vehicles proudly stand on the acclaimed double-wishbone suspension, which provides unprecedented handling and ride comfort in all driving conditions.

VSA and TCS help keep drivers in control during an under steer or over steer condition. These features enhance handling stability while driving on wet or slippery surfaces especially during the rainy season. They also help you stay on course during acceleration, cornering, or sudden collision-avoidance maneuvers. But VSA and TCS are silent workers. With their minimal intrusion on the driving experience, most drivers don’t even notice when these lifesavers are working. The Accord and the 2.4li CR-V are both equipped with VSA while the TCS is available on the 3.5L variant of the Accord.

Honda’s ABS with EBD is another showstopper when it comes to safety. As its name suggests, the ABS prevents wheel lock-up and provides steering control during hard-braking and low-traction conditions. This is complemented by the EBD which automatically adjusts the amount of force applied to each of the brakes to maintain full control.

Moving on to passive safety features, the body structure of any Honda vehicle is designed with the unique G-Force Control technology (G-CON).

Its G-CON technology has been tried out at Honda’s real world car-to-car test facility, the world’s first indoor omni-directional crash test safety facility. G-CON is an impact-absorbing structure, which controls forces exerted on the car body and at the same time controls collision force transferred from the car body to the occupants to reduce injuries to drivers and passengers.

Another passive feature is the SRS airbags. Aside from dual SRS airbags, a more upscale model like the Accord V6 also come with front side airbags and a new-generation curtain airbags to guarantee driver and passenger safety during collision.

Safety for Others

The G-CON protects not only the vehicle occupants but also the other people involved in the collision. Its unique design reduces damage to the other vehicle involved in the collision and minimizes injury to pedestrians.

Honda vehicles have impact-absorbing front areas, the part of the vehicle most likely to injure a pedestrian and they are also designed to reduce injuries around the legs as well. The hood, front fender and bumpers are all designed to absorb impact energy.

For Honda, playing it safe doesn’t have to mean taking out all the fun. Honda’s innovative features allow drivers to experience exhilarating driving pleasure without putting their lives and the lives of others in danger. So yes, being safe can be fun and it makes fun lasts much, much longer.

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) is offering 30% subsidy on all parts, lubricants and 10% on labor charges for flood-related repairs. To somehow help ease the burden of its valued customers, Honda cuts down its prices in consideration to the affected motorists of typhoon Ondoy.

The aftermath of the calamity has brought influx of vehicles for repairs across Metro Manila dealerships. “The typhoon has caused widespread damage in Luzon. We send our deepest sympathies to all the victims of this disaster. After the storm has passed, we have projected a significant increase in service intake of inundated vehicles. Unfortunately, such vast demand has exceeded the capacity of our dealerships, particularly Metro Manila branches. We appeal for everyone’s kind understanding of the situation. Since our dealerships can only accommodate as much cars, we advise our affected customers to kindly call first Honda’s Toll Free Hotline, 1-800-1000-HONDA (46632) and make an appointment before bringing vehicles to the dealerships to avoid inconvenience.” said Mr. Hiroshi Shimizu, president and general manager of HCPI.

At present, Honda regularly monitors its dealership network to assess the actual situation. “We are mobilizing more service people to assist dealers in any way possible. In anticipating the surge in service intake, we have ordered in advance and even expedited the deliveries of parts to ensure availability of supply.” said Mr. Danny Pedro, customer service division head of HCPI.

To prevent further damage to the vehicle, Honda advises immediate disconnection of the battery terminal or better yet, complete removal of battery from the vehicle. Honda also warned affected owners to avoid switching of ignition or starting of engine to prevent electrical short circuit. For vehicles completely submerged with floodwater, it is best to clean the car, especially the engine bay and airconditioning unit, with clean water to prevent further rust formation and corrosion.

Honda has a total of 18 authorized service outlets in the affected areas within Luzon. Apart from Metro Manila branches, Honda has less congested dealerships in Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Pangasinan to accept inundated vehicles.

For more information, you may log on to www.hondaphil.com or call Honda’s Hotline numbers 1-800-1000-HONDA (46632) and 857-7240 (for callers within Metro Manila), from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

MANILA, Philippines. Iseway Motors Philippines, Inc.,(IMPI) the sole and authorized distributor of Chery Automobiles in the country is all set for its 3rd dealer conference this coming October 3.

“It is all systems go,” said Tito Yupangco, Dealer Network Manager of Iseway. “We are making many changes in our operations and are seeking further improvements in the business,” Mr. Yupangco continues.

Iseway sold some 2,000 vehicles since business started in 2007. The bulk of vehicle sales was for the award-winning mini-car the Chery QQ. But it also sold over 200 of the Tiggo SUV in both the 1.6L and 2.0L trim.

“Our dealers are expecting a lot from this dealer conference, since we were hit hard by the global financial crisis and resulting recession in the Philippines,” states Mr. Yupangco. “We have done several steps before this conference including a series of pre-meetings with the dealers just to make sure that we covered all the bases. We are planning for a strong showing in 2010 and our intention is to re-study the whole operations in the light of new development in Chery China.”

Chery China has recently extended its assembly operations ASEAN-member countries like Thailand and Indonesia. It already has distributorships in Vietnam and Malaysia and the Philippines is seen as a hub for further expansion in the region.

According to Andrew Chan, director of Iseway Motors, Chery China is becoming more aggressive especially in the left hand drive markets. “Its recent expansion into Taiwan as well as increasing product efficiencies inside their domestic market proved to be good for the company since to minimize the effect of the global recession.”

The dealer conference will also be the venue where Iseway Motors will introduce an organizational revamp that will infuse new thinking in the organization. The new management team is composed of executive and managers hired from top Japanese automobile companies.

Chery dealers from Metro Manila and the provinces have given 100% support and attendance to this dealer conference which will be held in Dusit Hotel. October 3 was a date deliberately chosen since it is a most auspicious event for the Chinese community as it coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, more popularly known as the Mooncake Festival.
