“One Tonne Life” Project gives glimpse into a climate-smart lifestyle (0)

Volvo C30 Electric Car as official transport
With the "One Tonne Life" project, A-hus, Vattenfall and Volvo Cars aim to demonstrate what it means in practice for a family to adopt a climate-smart lifestyle.
The technology and the solutions that the Lindell family use to live the "One Tonne Life" are already available or will become available in the very near future.
A-hus President Peter Mossbrant explains:
"Our goal is to make low-energy wooden houses available to a broad market. More people should be able to live climate-smart - without compromising on comfort, function or design. We offer everything under one well-insulated roof. In fact, we will start selling this type of house in the end of January 2011."
The plans for the villa were drawn up by architect Gert Wingårdh. He has made the white house more energy-efficient and given it a more interesting appearance with the characteristic protruding framework around each window, the wind-catcher in the entrance hall and the large integrated veranda alongside the living room. Together with the black roof and the south-facing solar panels, the house has a truly unique personality all on its own.
Sealed climate shell, solar cells and solar panels
The "One Tonne Life" house has triple-layer walls with exceptional insulation capability and minimal air leakage. Other important features are improved insulation in the roof and foundations, as well as low energy windows and doors.
The wind-catcher in the entry hall prevents large airflows between the inside and the outside. This creates a comfortable climate inside the house and the energy consumption becomes lower. The protruding frames around the windows shade the interior when the sun is high in the summer sky, yet let in the winter sun's energy when it is low on the horizon.
In order to ensure a supply of fresh air to the well-encapsulated house, there is a ventilation unit that sucks out spent poor-quality air and replaces it with fresh, tempered air delivered to the bedrooms, living room and other public areas. The heat in the spent air is recycled.
The building's heating requirements are largely met by the incoming air, the occupants' body heat and heat-generating household appliances. Supplementary underfloor heating is installed on the bottom floor. The solar cells on the roof and the south-facing facade generate electricity that provides additional heating or is used to recharge the electric car. Any electricity that is not consumed by the family is fed into the national grid.
The solar panels on the carport roof meet a large portion of the household's heating and hot water requirements during April to October. When the sun is not shining and the accumulator tanks have no solar power stored, the Lindell family get renewable energy from Vattenfall.
Volvo C30 Electric - up to 150 km on one charge
The family's Volvo C30 Electric operates quietly and emits no carbon dioxide at all when it is recharged with renewable electricity. The electric car is part of Volvo Cars' drive to promote electrification. It offers the very same comfort, interior space and safety as the standard version of the C30. The difference is that the Volvo Electric C30 is powered solely by electricity.
The "One Tonne Life" project gives Volvo Cars the opportunity to study how the electric car fits in with a modern family's lifestyle. "We will reap immense benefit from the project in our ongoing development of electric cars. It will give us clear information about what we need to deliver so buyers feel that a battery-powered car is attractive and cost-effective to drive and own," says Lennart Stegland, manager of Volvo Cars' Special Vehicles division.
The Volvo C30 Electric is powered by lithium-ion batteries that are recharged via a regular wall socket. A full charge takes about eight hours. The range on a full charge is up to150 kilometres.
"150 kilometres is much more than the average European commuter drives in one day. In "One Tonne Life" this range will cover most of the Lindell family's transport requirements," says Lennart Stegland.
Smart energy solutions
Climate-smart and energy-producing houses are an important piece of the puzzle in the development of intelligent electricity grids, which in turn are an important ingredient in a sustainable society.
Vattenfall has several projects dealing with the development of intelligent electricity grids and energy solutions for households that focus on electricity monitoring and energy efficiency enhancement. As a result, some home-owners can be both electricity consumers and small-scale electricity producers, for instance by utilizing solar cell technology.
In "One Tonne Life" Vattenfall is making a variety of contributions including Energy Watch – cutting edge technology for measuring the family's electricity consumption in real time. "We're helping the Lindell family keep a watch on their electricity consumption and also helping the family members use their electricity in an efficient way," says Torbjörn Wahlborg, President of Vattenfall Norden. He adds: "We are also working on a further development of the electricity grid so that a family whose home is fitted with solar cells is able to sell its surplus to us when their own production exceeds demand. At the same time, they get a secure supply of electricity from green sources such as windpower or hydropower when the sun is not shining."
Eco-conscious choices
Food represents about one-quarter of a household's climate footprint, and supermarket chain ICA sees considerable potential here for reducing carbon dioxide emissions through active choices.
"We have a wide range of eco-marked, ecologically produced and locally grown produce. By participating in "One Tonne Life" we hope to find new ways of involving and helping our customers make simple but significant choices both in the supermarket and in the kitchen at home," says ICA environmental affairs manager Maria Smith.
Energy-efficient household appliances
Household appliances account for up to half of a normal household's total energy consumption - and the way these appliances are used also affects the size of the electricity bill. Over the past 15 years, Siemens has cut energy consumption of its appliances by up to 80 percent, and its figures for energy and water consumption are of world class. "Our aim is to help ensure that tomorrow's household can continue to live as comfortably as today's, but with due care for the environment. The products that the Lindell family use show how far we have already come. We will also help them use their white goods in the best possible way," says Martin Knobloch, President of Siemens Home Appliances Northern Europe.

Goodyear Launches Assurance Fuel Max in Asia (0)
9:18 AM by kankan , under goodyear assurance, goodyear philippines
Maximum Fuel Efficiency. Maximum Protection.
Goodyear Asia Pacific launches its latest tire from its award-winning Assurance line, the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max with Fuel Saving technology that provides 4% more fuel efficiency and 15% longer mileage than conventional tire technology. With safety at the heart of all Goodyear tires, the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max is reinforced with the same DuPont™ Kevlar® overlay – a material that is five times stronger than steel – that made its predecessor so successful.
Designed for family cars in the mid and premium markets, consumers who are looking for value for money and safety can now achieve maximum fuel efficiency and maximum protection with this new tire.
“In an environment where consumers are increasingly concerned about the rising cost of fuel and carbon emissions, Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max delivers more fuel efficiency, without compromising the key safety attributes that are the hallmark of all Goodyear tires,” said Daniel Smytka, Vice President, Consumer Tires, Goodyear Asia Pacific.
“When drivers are navigating the roads of Asia, they need a tire that offers maximum safety. Features such as a strong grip, puncture resistance, blow out resistance, shorter braking distance and anti-skid are critical safety performance attributes that
urban consumers require. The Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max combines innovative tire technologies and is the tire families can depend on for everyday city driving or weekend road trips,” said Smytka.
More Fuel Efficiency and Longer Tread Life
One of the ways to reduce fuel consumption is to decrease some of the frictions while it drives. Rolling resistance or rolling friction, is the resistance that occurs when a tire rolls on a flat surface. The greater the resistance, the greater the energy required to keep the tire rolling. Up to 20 per cent of a car’s fuel consumption is due to the tires. Therefore a decrease in tire rolling friction leads to a reduction in fuel consumption.
The new Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max features an advanced full silica compound which reduces the friction between the tire’s rubber molecules and provides high resistance to abrasion, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and a longer tread life.
Additionally, the tire is built with a hard base under the tread, which reduces deformation in the crown area and heat build-up, contributing to higher fuel efficiency. The tire also features even pressure distribution which helps reduce frictional energy caused by abrasion and heat at the tread surface, reducing the rate of wear.
*In tests evaluated by TÜV SÜD Automotive GmbH as a technical witness partner, results showed that Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max is 4% more fuel efficient than the company’s previous generation of tire technology where the tread compound is carbon based. This test was conducted in Mireval, France using Citroen C4 1.6l on size 195/65 R15 versus Goodyear Ducaro GA (test report number 76243002-1, May 2010).
In addition, based on internal tests conducted by Goodyear Innovation Center* Luxembourg, Assurance Fuel Max has a projected tread life of up to 85,777 km, which is 15% longer in tread life versus the previous technology (Goodyear Ducaro
GA). Actual fuel savings and tread life may vary according to other factors including environment, road, vehicle conditions, vehicle model, and driving habits, etc.
This is the tire that pays you back. The savings gained from fuel efficiency over the life of the tire outweighs the cost of the tire itself,” said Smytka.
Fuel Saving Example
New Assurance Fuel Max’s fuel efficiency improvement can lead to 320L of fuel savings. For example: If a 1.6L car has an average fuel consumption rate of 10L/100km, is fitted with Assurance Fuel Max on size 195/65R15 91V and travels a distance of 80,000 km, the potential fuel savings can be calculated as follows:
80,000 km (distance traveled) x 10L/100 km (fuel consumption rate) x 4% (fuel saving rate) = 320 L (potential fuel savings)
Maximum Protection against Road Hazards
A layer DuPont™ Kevlar®, a lightweight material which is five times stronger than steel, reinforces Assurance Fuel Max for added durability and protection against road hazards like potholes. This material is the same cutting-edge technology used in protective applications like bulletproof vests, industrial gloves and hoses.
Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max is also built with two plies in the sidewalls of the tire for increased durability and protection against dangerous road hazards.
A Comfortable and Quiet Ride
The tire is designed with a four pitch sequence and high centerline block angles that helps to facilitate a smooth and quiet contact with the road.
Shorter Braking and Grip on Wet and Dry Roads
Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max is constructed with unique three dimensional waffle blades in the tread to enable improved lateral interlocking power while providing maximized circumferential decoupling. This technology delivers better braking and grip on both wet and dry surfaces.
For maximum wet-traction, the tread has also been designed with four uninterrupted circumferential grooves, which provide room in the footprint for the tire to absorb and repel water, ensuring better aquaplaning resistance on wet roads.
“Building on over 110 years of innovation and leadership, drivers can trust that Goodyear’s Fuel Max will get them where they need to go with more confidence, while giving them the “Assurance” that their tire will go further with less wear, consuming less
fuel, added Smytka.
Disclaimer
Fuel saving value of 4% as evaluated by TUV SUD Automotive GmbH as a technical witness partner in cooperation with Goodyear in Mireval, Report Number 76243002- 1, May 2010 as tested on Citroen C4 1.6L on size 195/65 R15. Internal Goodyear test projected Assurance Fuel Max tread life to 85,777km., 15% longer versus conventional technology (Goodyear Ducaro GA). Actual fuel savings and tread life may vary according to other factors including environment, road, vehicle conditions, vehicle
model, and driving habits, etc.

Volvo Cars' Powerful T6 Engine Wins Prestigious Ward's 10 Best Engines Award (0)
9:11 AM by kankan , under volvo cars, volvo philippines
Volvo Cars' hot new S60 sport sedan continues to impress the pundits with the announcement of its powerful T6 engine being lauded as one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2011. With a blistering 304 horsepower, 440 Nm of torque at a low 2,100 rpm and combined fuel economy of 21 mpg, it's easy to see why.
This year marks a first for Volvo Cars to win the annual award bestowed by the editors of Ward's. In all, 38 vehicles with new or significantly improved engines were tested and evaluated. "Volvo clearly benchmarked BMW in developing the supremely smooth T6 engine, based on its delicious mid-range power band and paucity of turbo lag," noted Tom Murphy, Executive Editor of Ward's AutoWorld in his December 7 article highlighting the awards. "This engine is perfectly suited for the all-new S60 and powers it into contention against bigger, better-established luxury entries."
The T6 engine, matches the torque of Volvo's V8, but makes its power far lower in the rev range: 2,100 rpm compared to 3,950 rpm. While boasting 304 horsepower, fuel economy figures for the T6 of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway make it one of Volvo's most fuel efficient engines offered in the U.S. In fact, the T6 engine is 17 percent more fuel efficient than the V8. Aside from the S60 sport sedan, the turbocharged T6 engine is also available in certain markets in the 2011 S80, XC60 and XC70.
"The S60's T6 engine is simply the best engine Volvo's ever produced," noted Doug Speck, President and CEO, Volvo Cars of North America, LLC. "It's powerful, smooth, and gets great fuel economy. We're honored that Ward's is recognizing the T6 engine as one of its 10 Best for 2011."
Essentially a heavily modified version of the T6 originally introduced in the 2009 XC60 premium crossover, the goal for the 2011 iteration was to perfectly balance performance with fuel economy and maintain a low environmental impact. Volvo engineers focused their efforts on reducing internal friction, increasing power output and improving fuel economy.
The T6 benefits from improved valve tappets, which feature Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating. The carbon structure is extremely hard and has self-lubricating properties. The DLC surface reduces camshaft friction, enabling lower fuel consumption and extending service life. Additionally, a new type of Denso Super Ignition Spark Plug results in increased power output, improved fuel economy, better cold starting performance and longer service life. Highly polished cam shafts also result in reduced friction which helps contribute to the T6's excellent fuel economy and performance.
Volvo Cars also developed new engine management software optimized for fuel economy.
The six-speed "Geartronic" transmission received revised mapping software that allowed for a new "Sport" mode. In "Sport" mode, the transmission remaps the shift points, holding the shifts higher in the rev band for improved performance. Other enhancements include revised frame bearings within the crankshaft, a low-friction accessory drive belt tensioner and aluminum water pump housing, all designed with improved engine efficiency in mind.

Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit defended its top spot in luxury-auto sales in Europe last year while Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s main brand captured second place from Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz as premium-car demand revived.
New registrations for BMWs rose 6.5 percent last year to 609,196, the fastest pace among the three brands, exceeding Mercedes’ 586,146, while Audi stayed on top with sales of 623,536, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said today. In December, Audi deliveries climbed 16 percent, beating BMW’s 7.3 percent gain and 4.2 percent for Mercedes.
Luxury-car sales benefited as buyers gained confidence in the economic outlook and companies used improved earnings to restock corporate fleets. Demand plunged in 2009 as customers opted for cheaper and more fuel-efficient cars that were backed by government subsidies. Most incentives ended last year. Audi, based in Ingolstadt, Germany, aims to dethrone BMW as the global luxury champion by 2015.
“The recovery of the premium segment in 2010, after the damaging effects from the incentives and a revival of the corporate fleet market, looks set to continue this year,” said Philippe Barrier, an analyst at Societe Generale in Paris. “The key market in Europe is Germany. We expect a recovery there next year and that will be very important for BMW, Daimler and Audi.”
Revamped 5-Series
BMW deliveries were boosted by the revamped 5-Series sedan, while Audi was helped by the new A7 Sportback and A1 compact. Mercedes, with headquarters in Stuttgart, saw registrations decline 0.1 percent as its S- and E-Class sedans lifted sales mostly outside of Europe and as buyers waited for the introduction of the new C-Class sedan. It was Mercedes’ second consecutive decline in Europe.
While the region is still a major market for premium cars, its importance is declining compared with emerging markets in Asia, said Tim Schuldt, a Frankfurt-based analyst at Equinet AG.
“Europe is still the bread-and-butter market where the premium carmakers generate their volume, but it’s not where growth and margins are coming from,” Schuldt said. “There are a lot of lower-end cars in the product mix, while in a market like China people typically go for the XXL deluxe S-class.”
Overall European new-car registrations declined 4.9 percent to 13.8 million, the Brussels-based industry group known as ACEA said in today’s release.
Jaguar Land Rover’s full-year sales gained 9.2 percent to 94,035 and deliveries at Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus division declined 10 percent to 17,857. Volkswagen’s Bentley and BMW’s Rolls-Royce units weren’t listed separately by ACEA.
Volume Market
Demand in Germany is likely to stand out as the strongest economic growth since re-unification fuels consumer confidence and spending in Europe’s largest economy, Equinet’s Schuldt said. Cuts in government budgets and weaker economic growth in other countries will hurt volume market more than premium sales because customers in that segment are more likely to worry about their jobs, he added.
Car sales in Western Europe will fall 2.3 percent to 12.7 million units this year, according to a forecast by Citigroup Inc.
